Cayapó

Cayapó is the bitch who, together with me, stood at the very beginning of the idea of breeding. That idea did not come automatically or immediately, but gradually took shape with enormous respect through the experiences and knowledge that I would have found difficult to gain without Tigress Cayapó. I consider it an honour to have her and, in a way, also a responsibility not to waste such a wonderful and exceptional bitch. She is the one who shaped my view of working with a dog, my idea of the ideal Australian Shepherd, and also my thoughts about possible future breeding. When I write about not wasting her, I mean above all actively spending the time we have been given together and making the fullest possible use of the potential that my bitch, and indeed the Australian Shepherd breed as a whole, offers. Through her versatility, Cayapó gives me so many opportunities to learn, move forward and grow!

Together, we take part in a wide range of different activities. At shows, Tigress Cay regularly achieves excellent evaluations and placements, and the same applies across a varied range of canine disciplines such as sport cynology, obedience, sheep herding, rally obedience and dogdancing, where she not only completes one exam after another, but also regularly places among the top competitors. Because of the number of activities, we also occasionally do tricks, nosework, agility or protection work. A special area is mantrailing – a non-sport discipline of practical tracking focused on searching for missing persons based on their individual scent. In this field, Cayapó is currently the only Australian Shepherd in the whole Czech Republic, and also in Europe, to have passed the examination level for operational deployment dogs!

It is important to me to have a dog not only for work and sport, but also as an easy-going companion for everyday life. Cayapó is a typical Australian Shepherd – she pays no attention to strangers, but if there is interest in her attention, she enjoys petting and cuddling. In contact with children or elderly people, she behaves sensitively. She handles the usual hustle and bustle of civilisation as well as sudden noises, and on walks in nature, even when off leash, she has my full trust. She loves watching wildlife, but she remains controllable, does not chase animals and is able to stay calm.

Eager to cooperate with her owner, joyful about shared activity, sensitive, perceptive, driven yet gentle, trusting yet independent, able to switch on immediately or switch off just as quickly when needed, into calm, into ease, ready for every bit of mischief and for every ordinary day – that, for me, is the temperament ideal of an Australian Shepherd.

None of this is something to be taken for granted. Her versatility and results are the combination of exceptional natural abilities, but inseparably connected with that are also days, weeks and months of honest, patient and systematic work, which allows us to develop and maintain this potential.

Alongside temperament, conformation is also important to me – correct body structure, light and balanced movement, and the typical expression of an Australian Shepherd. And only when all of this comes together – the right, balanced harmony in both conformation and temperament – does it become my idea of the Australian Shepherd I am lucky enough to have.
